Everyone loves the highlight reel. “We hit 8,500 sales!” sounds impressive. What nobody talks about is how messy, slow, and often demoralizing the road actually was.
Here’s the version we don’t put on the sales page.
The first two years were brutal
We launched themes that barely sold. Some months we made less than a junior freelancer. Support tickets came in at 2 a.m. and buyers expected instant replies. We rewrote the same documentation three times because people still couldn’t figure out basic things. And every time a new “revolutionary” page builder or trend appeared, we felt like we were already behind.
There was no overnight success. Just slow accumulation of small improvements, better support, and refusing to quit when numbers looked embarrassing.
What actually moved the needle
- Consistent quality over chasing trends
- Answering support like a human instead of a ticket system
- Building a small but loyal audience outside ThemeForest
- Saying no to feature requests that would turn the theme into a mess
The sales didn’t explode because of one viral launch. They grew because people started recommending us when someone asked for a clean, well-supported theme.
The part nobody wants to admit
A big percentage of those 8,500 sales came from people who will never buy from us again. Marketplace buyers are often transactional. The real business sits in the smaller group that sticks around, leaves thoughtful reviews, and comes back when we release something new.
If you’re just starting out and the numbers feel humiliating — you’re not behind. You’re in the part of the story most successful authors quietly skip when they post their milestones.
Keep going. The ugly middle is where the real work happens.
