The cards look plain

The layout uses the built-in Default card. Pick a skin of your theme in the Skin section, or add one (see Theme templates). A layout whose skin was removed from the theme shows “No skin” in the Grid Layouts list: pick another one.

The lightbox does not open

Check that it is enabled in Settings → Lightbox, and that the layout’s Click action is Open the image in a lightbox.

Project links show “Page not found”

Open Settings → Permalinks and save once. This happens when another plugin uses the same addresses; change them in Settings → Portfolio.

The filter, search or pagination does nothing

They must be on the same page as their grid, with the same id. With the same layout twice on a page, point the controls of the second one to it with instance="2".

Images look blurry or too heavy

Adjust Settings → Image Sizes to the width of your grid cells, then regenerate thumbnails for existing images (with a plugin such as Regenerate Thumbnails).
